Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Translate the phrase goals of care into kitchen-table language easily understandable by people without medical training.
- Describe how two potential goals of care, one valued by a physician and another valued by the patient or family, might come into conflict.
- Name at least one phrase, sometimes used by doctors in conversations about the end of life, that families may interpret as medical abandonment, and to provide alternative language that conveys continued commitment.
