Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the key factors used in the initial risk assessment of patients with pulmonary embolism, including the importance of hemodynamic stability and right ventricular dysfunction.
  • Explain the role of systemic thrombolysis in the management of high-risk and intermediate/high-risk pulmonary embolism, including patient selection criteria and contraindications.
  • Apply risk stratification tools, such as the Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (PESI) and assessment of biomarkers (e.g., troponins), in determining the prognosis and management of patients with intermediate/high-risk pulmonary embolism.
