Target Audience:

Physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals who provide prenatal care, inpatient maternity care, and postpartum care.

Educational Objectives:

At the completion of this module participants will be able to:

  • Identify key structures including alveoli, milk ducts, and areola within the lactating breast and describe their functions
  • Differentiate the three distinct stages of milk production from colostrum to mature milk
  • Explain how prolactin stimulates milk production and oxytocin triggers the let-down reflex
  • Assess clinical indicators including latch, swallowing, and infant satiety cues.
