Target Audience:

Physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals who provide prenatal care, inpatient maternity care, and postpartum care.

Educational Objectives:

At the completion of this module participants will be able to:

  • Identify maternal illness considerations, dietary factors, and contraception options for breastfeeding mothers
  • Apply techniques for managing common breastfeeding complications such as sore nipples, engorgement, ductal inflammation, and mastitis
  • Evaluate medication safety during breastfeeding and utilize reliable resources of information to guide clinical decisions
  • Distinguish true medical contraindications to breastfeeding from conditions where breastfeeding remains safe and appropriate
