INTRODUCTION
Educational Objectives:

This training program is divided into four sections with a quiz after each section. The training is intended to provide you with a general overview for:

  1. Identifying chemical hazards in the lab,
  2. Controlling those chemical hazards,
  3. Disposing of chemical waste and
  4. Responding to lab emergencies

Successful completion of this online module meets the requirements of the OSHA Standard on "Occupational Exposures to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories" (29CFR 1910.1450) and the University's requirements for Chemical Hygiene training upon initial assignment to a University of Pittsburgh laboratory and for tri-annual refresher retraining. Additional safety training by your Department, Principal Investigator (PI) or Lab Supervisor is also required to address the specific protocols or hazards in your laboratory. This training must be documented. Additional safety training should also be conducted as new chemicals, processes, and/or equipment are introduced. The PIs / Supervisors are responsible to ensure lab work is conducted safely.

    The Chemical Hygiene Plan:

    The University's program for chemical safety is detailed in the University of Pittsburgh Chemical Hygiene Plan. This Plan describes general hazards from laboratory chemicals and appropriate work practices, procedures, and controls that should be in place to protect you and other laboratory staff from those hazards.

    Specific hazards associated with your lab operations are addressed in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or protocols developed by your lab. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are a set of written operating procedures that explain how to safely work with hazardous chemicals during a given task or experiment. In addition, SOPs should also address potential hazards in an experiment, control measures, and required PPE specific to the experiment.
